X-energy’s Innovative Microreactor

X-energy’s XENITH microreactor stands out as a high-temperature gas-cooled system developed initially for the Department of Defense’s Project Pele. The reactor’s design is compact, approximately the size of a standard shipping container, allowing for versatile deployment. With the ability to operate continuously for up to 20 years without refueling, the XENITH can generate between 3 to 10 megawatts of electricity, making it a flexible solution for varying power demands.

Designed for seamless integration, the reactor requires less than two acres of space, allowing for compatibility with existing infrastructures. Its advanced safety features, including a helium-cooled heat transfer system and an open-air Brayton cycle power conversion system, ensure efficient and secure operations. In addition, the reactor is designed for swift decommissioning, potentially within two years of completing its operational life.

The XENITH microreactor aims to enhance military readiness by providing a reliable power source, supporting black-start capability, and reducing reliance on external fuel supplies. According to X-energy CEO J Clay Sell, the collaboration between federal agencies and X-energy is a testament to the government’s commitment to pioneering advanced nuclear technologies.

Expanding Nuclear Offerings

Beyond the XENITH microreactor, X-energy is developing the Xe-100, a fourth-generation high-temperature gas-cooled reactor. The Xe-100’s modular design allows it to be scaled into a 320 MWe power plant, with the potential for further expansion if required.

Positioned as an affordable alternative to other nuclear solutions, the Xe-100 will utilize off-the-shelf components that are manufactured and transported to deployment sites. This approach not only reduces costs but also accelerates deployment timelines. The reactor will operate on TRISO particle fuel and boasts an impressive operational life of 60 years.

Additionally, X-energy is advancing its nuclear fuel solutions with the construction of a fabrication facility dedicated to producing its proprietary TRISO-X fuel. This initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to offer a comprehensive portfolio of scalable, secure, and sustainable power solutions.
