Porsche’s decision to pivot its strategy comes amid challenging market conditions. CEO Oliver Blume, PhD, highlighted that while 57 percent of vehicles delivered in Europe during the first half of 2025 were electrified, the global share stood at only 36 percent. The company’s main markets, the United States and China, have not yet fully embraced the electric luxury segment, prompting a reevaluation of their approach. Blume stated, “We are reorganizing our battery activities and focusing on cell and system development.”

This strategic shift indicates a move away from large-scale production, which was initially envisioned for the Cellforce Group. By transitioning to an independent research and development unit, Porsche aims to leverage its strengths in innovation. This new direction will allow the company to maintain its position as a leader in electric mobility while addressing economic constraints and market demands.

The Cellforce Group will work closely with PowerCo, Volkswagen’s battery competence center, to develop high-performance cells.

Michael Steiner, PhD, Porsche’s executive board member for research and development, acknowledged the dedication of the Cellforce Group’s employees. He explained that the original business model was not economically viable, necessitating a strategic redirection. By turning the subsidiary into a standalone R&D unit, Porsche aims to capitalize on its expertise and innovation capabilities.

The original plan for the Cellforce Group included launching a production site in Kirchentellinsfurt with a capacity of around 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh). Cellforce Group will continue to invest in all-electric models with high-performance batteries, utilizing the expertise gained over the years.

Steiner mentioned that the new R&D unit could play a crucial role in Porsche’s future endeavors. The subsidiary’s expertise will also support V4Smart, a German company specializing in ultra-high-performance lithium-ion round cells, which Porsche acquired in March 2025. This collaboration is expected to enhance Porsche’s high-performance battery capabilities, benefiting both the company and the Volkswagen Group.
